Class Teacher - Miss L Southcott

Teaching Assistant - Mrs L Goodwin

Welcome to Rowan Class!

Here in Rowan Class we welcome pupils into Year 5, a year that can be very challenging but also exciting! The pupils are supported by myself, Miss Southcott and Mrs Goodwin.

I feel that Year 5 is an important year as it prepares pupils for Year 6 and is the start of the transition period. It really is amazing how much the pupils grow in Year 5, both academically and in personality. Year 5 allows the children to become more independent, and find their hopes and ambitions that will hopefully stay with them for life! We promote a growth mindset approach to learning, helping pupils to realise their potential and that in order to achieve, it is perfectly okay to make mistakes. We encourage children to take note of their own well-being and ensure they know where to find help should they ever need anyone to talk to.

We encourage a very active process of learning. We like the children to take charge of their own learning through questioning. We like children to learn collaboratively and share their learning experience together. We study a variety of topics which allows areas of curriculum enhancement. This year we took part in a clogging project as part of our local area study (cotton mills). We have visited Eureka and taken part in a Rover mission on Mars as part of our Earth and space topic. We feel these opportunities allow the children to embed their learning and more importantly...enjoy it!

In Year 5, we start to think about high schools and prepare ourselves for the transition period. We are lucky enough to be part of a partnership with our local Catholic High School, Mount Carmel. We have taken part in a structured programme which allows us to attend Mount Carmel to take part in high school lessons. So far we have had a Spanish food experience (MFL), made a moving mythical creature (DT) and studied electricity (science) using the amazing resources that Mount Carmel could share with us! This is an amazing opportunity for Year 5 to experience life in high school and calm any worries/anxieties they might have.

We can't wait to see you in Year 5!
